Just what is this?
Inspired by the technology that brought Microsoft to the attention of the U.S. Gov't, we felt that the Mac should not be deprived of such similar technology. To this end, we developed a technology that would allow you to browse the web without leaving your Finder - and for some reason the name "MACtive Desktop" seemed appropriate.
Installation Instructions
1) Copy PhaseShiftNub into your Extensions folder (drop it on your System Folder)
2) Startup your favorite Web browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator/Communicator)
3) Double click on MACtive Desktop
4) Enjoy!
What works - and what doesn't
Whatever can be displayed in your browser, will appear on the desktop. Text, graphics, animations, QT movies and even Java applets! However, since this hack was written over two days and with not all that much sleep, it's got a few "limitations".
1) On certain machines, icons may be obscured by the browser instead of sitting behind them.
2) Clicking on the desktop browser isn't implemented (yet)
3) Typing into the desktop browser isn't implemented (yet)
4) The "dish washer" and "floor sweeper" modes aren't implemented (yet?)
Is this free, or what?
You bet ya, for sure!! Since it seems to be the thing to do this year, we hearby release the extension, application and source code as "Open Source" - under the "pick your favorite open source license" license.
